Sean McAlister

DA Education '99

Sean McAlister serves as chief learning officer at the U.S. Department of Commerce, where he leads professional development for more than 48,000 employees across 12 bureaus in 120 countries and more than 600 U.S. cities. With more than 25 years of experience in public service and international trade, he has championed learning strategies that elevate a globally engaged workforce and bolster economic diplomacy. 
 
At the heart of his role is a commitment to cultivating mission-ready professionals through skill-based learning, leadership training, and organizational development. McAlister's approach integrates strategic talent planning with a focus on agility and excellence. 
 
He holds a doctorate in adult education and international transactions from George Mason University and degrees from East Tennessee State University. His academic background reinforces a leadership style rooted in lifelong learning, inclusion, and global awareness. 
 
Outside of government, McAlister is an active leader in Rotary International, where he has held positions such as club president, district governor, and chair of the Rotary Leadership Institute for the mid-Atlantic. Having visited more than 80 countries, he advances peace and economic development around the world. His life’s work reflects the values of service, community, and global impact.
