Laura Scott
MFA '93
Laura Scott is from Brimfield, Ohio. Immediately after graduating from George Mason in 1993 with an MFA in Creative Writing, she joined the university’s English department as an academic coordinator and instructor. She teaches fiction writing to undergraduates and specializes in helping students begin their journey as novelists. For Scott, teaching is hugely rewarding, but her favorite daily duty is advising. She was surprised to find a love for helping students discover their paths through the major. Her career at Goerge Mason came as a big surprise to her own advisor from when she was an undergraduate at Kent State University as she wasn’t an easy advisee.
As a writer, Scott has published many short stories, as well as five novels. In the spring 2024, George Mason granted her study leave to practice generative techniques for developing first drafts of novels, which she now uses to teach her students.
