Bio: Lisa Rosser is a Northern Virginia based human resource professional and a military veteran who spent 22 years in the Army (active and reserve) 8 years working as a management consultant with Accenture. She has spent the last 15 years running her own consulting firm, working with the talent acquisition and diversity departments within large organizations. She is a mom of 3 teenage boys and volunteers her time with Food For Others and Team Rubicon.

How did you get your first job? Joined the Army through the Army ROTC program at Mason.

If you were starting your career today, what is the one piece of advice you would give yourself? Be curious. Tell people what you are studying or which field of study you have earned your degree and ask how that might be used in their company or in their personal lives, for example as a volunteer or community leader.  You never know what interesting ways what you have learned can be used.

In what ways has your career path been unique or unconventional? I joined the Army immediately after graduation, so I didn't directly apply my degree until 10+ years later when I left active duty and joined the reserves.  I used it a lot as a human capital consultant and as a self-employed business consultant.

What career paths have you explored or transitioned between? The military to business consulting to self-employment as a consultant.

What skills or experiences have been most valuable in your career? The Communication classes I took on theory of argumentation, rhetoric, research, forensics, media, journalism, public speaking, non-verbal communication, etc. are skills I use every day in my business and personal life.
