Edwin Powell

BA Education ’97, DA '99

Edwin Witt Powell of Washington, D.C., was born and raised in Chase City, Virginia. He earned a BA in psychology from Rutgers University, an MA in gerontology from the College of Notre Dame, an MEd in psychology from Howard University, an MA in counseling from Liberty University, and a Doctor of Arts in higher education from George Mason University. In recognition of his contributions to human rights and education, he received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters (honoris causa) from Essex College. He was also awarded the St. Lucia Medal of Honor (Gold) for his distinguished service in intelligence and national security. 

Powell’s accomplished career spans education, psychology, public service, national security, and international human rights advocacy. His research interests and publications focus on education, disability advocacy, health equity, mental health, and law. Throughout his career, he has served as a human rights commissioner, government analyst, special education teacher, juvenile probation officer, high school principal, educational psychologist, and mental health expert for the District of Columbia Superior Court. 

A former faculty member at Howard University College of Medicine, Powell held appointments in pediatrics/child health and community/family medicine and served as a research associate in geriatric medicine. He currently serves as special advisor to the Ministry of National Security for the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis. He is married to George Mason alum, Elizabeth Hobson-Powell, BSN ‘97, and is the proud father of four adult children and grandfather to four granddaughters.
