CHSS Distinguished Alumni - Faculty - Poapst

Jackie Poapst is the Warren Decker director of debate and an assistant professor in the Department of Communication at George Mason University. A proud George Mason alum, she earned both her MA and PhD in communication before returning to lead one of the nation's premier intercollegiate debate programs. Her research examines critical legal communication, rhetoric, and the intersections of law, identity, and power, while her teaching encourages students to think critically about public argument and democratic engagement. 

As director of debate, Poapst has helped guide George Mason's nationally recognized debate program to sustained competitive success while mentoring hundreds of students in research, advocacy, and leadership. She also directs the George Mason Debate Institute, Virginia's largest middle and high school debate camp, expanding opportunities for young people to develop the communication skills necessary for civic participation. Beyond George Mason, she has served in numerous national leadership roles within collegiate debate, including president of the Cross Examination Debate Association, helping shape the future of debate education across the country. 

A first-generation college graduate, Jackie is passionate about making higher education more accessible and empowering students to discover their voices. Whether coaching national champions, teaching future communicators, or mentoring the next generation of scholars and advocates, she is committed to fostering intellectual curiosity, inclusive excellence, and meaningful public dialogue. 

Poapst is honored to receive the 2026 CHSS Distinguished Faculty Alumni Award, recognizing George Mason alumni whose careers exemplify leadership, service, and a lasting commitment to creating positive change in their communities and professions.
