Cathy Lemmon, BA Speech Communication ’86, MA English – Professional Writing & Editing ’93, is a seasoned communications professional whose career has been defined by leadership and expertise in writing, editing, publishing, and project management across the government, private, and non-profit sectors.
Cathy credits her college internships in communication with helping launch a meaningful career in public service with Fairfax County Government. She began in the county’s Office of Public Affairs as a public information officer, where she wrote and produced newsletters, managed web content, developed communication/marketing plans, supported public information campaigns, and assisted with media relations. Later, at the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, Cathy led the redesign and rewrite of the department’s website and played a collaborative role in developing agency web applications. Building on her communication and project management skills, she went on to serve as an IT project manager for the department. After retiring from the county, Cathy recently founded The Lemmon Group, LLC, which provides writing and editing services to clients seeking polished, professional content for both digital and print platforms.
A Past President of the George Mason University Alumni Association, Cathy remains active in the Mason community. She currently serves on the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Advisory Board, is a member of the Communication Department’s Insight Committee, and represents alumni on the University Naming Committee. She also is a Friend of the Hylton Performing Arts Center, a supporter of the University Libraires, and a long-time basketball season ticket holder.
