Meet the Honorable Joshua C. Fiveson, 2025 CHSS degree celebration alumni speaker

George Mason University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) is excited to announce that the Honorable Joshua C. Fiveson, BS Administration of Justice '10 and recipient of the 2022 CHSS Distinguished Alumni - Criminology, Law and Society Award, will address graduates and their guests as the alumni speaker of the upcoming degree celebration on May 16 at EagleBank Arena.

Fiveson, who currently serves as the 22nd Chief of the Texas Attorney General's Opinion Committee, is a U.S. Navy veteran and an academic who previously served as one of the youngest state judges in Texas.

After graduating with honors from George Mason, Fiveson earned his JD from Harvard Law School and served as an advisor for Chief Justice Hecht at the Supreme Court of Texas, Chief Judge Ohlson at the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, and Judge Willett at the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. While in uniform, Fiveson was selected by the American Bar Association as the Navy’s 2020 “Outstanding Young Military Lawyer,” was nominated as the Judge Advocate General’s “Military Justice Officer of the Year,” and received a variety of civilian and military decorations.

Fiveson has published on a wide range of topics, held seven post-graduate fellowships, and taught law around the world—lecturing foreign military branches as an adjunct instructor with the Defense Institute for International Legal Studies, in addition to law students at Harvard, the University of Virginia, and the University of Texas.

Above all else, Fiveson’s most noteworthy accomplishments are at home: he is the father of three rambunctious children and husband to the woman of his dreams.
