On Friday Oct. 2, 2009 the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science hosted the Celebration of Scholarship to honor two of their star faculty members as well as the students who were awarded Dean's Challenge scholarships.

The event, which was held in the Mason Hall atrium, honored a group twenty students as well as CHSS's Tyler Cowen - an economics professor - and COS's Jagadish Shukla - a climatologist.

The Award for Scholarship was established in 1996. This year's scholars join a distinguished group of past recipients of the Award for Scholarship.

"Every year is a little bit different, but what really stands out is the delight of all the recipients," said CHSS Dean Jack Censer. "I can't tell you how much pleasure I have in congratulating these individuals who have accomplished so much. I think the thing that struck me most in this particular case was how intertwined Tyler and Jagadish's work is with others at Mason. Both thanked a lot of people with whom they work and to whom they are grateful."

The event also recognized students who were winners of the Dean's Challenge.  Many friends and family of the awardees were in attendance.
