How did you choose your specific area of study?
After completing Rome study abroad courses in 2016, I realized that this was the area of my greatest interests, in particular studies of Pompeii. One of my professors once told me that I seem to be a Roman antiquarian at heart, and this is true!
How did your academic experiences in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences impact you?
All of my experiences in the CHSS have been positive. As an older student, I have greatly appreciated the welcoming and stimulating environment that the CHSS has provided, no matter the age.
Of which accomplishment(s) during your time at Mason are you most proud?
- Completing study abroad courses in Florence and Rome
- Completing (and continuing) an internship with the Medici Archive Project in Florence, Italy; assisting with an exhibition on the Florentine Ghetto to be held at the Uffizi in 2023
- Assisting in the curation of the GMU Plaster Cast Collection in Horizon Hall
- Making the Dean's list in each of my undergraduate semesters
- Receiving the Art History Award for Academic Excellence in 2017, 2021, and 2022
- Receiving the Outstanding Project Award in 2022
Are there faculty or staff members who made a difference during your Mason career?
Dr. Gregg had a tremendous impact on my Mason career. I took several courses from him, including study abroad courses in Rome. Each course was challenging (as it should be) and fulfilling. Dr. Gregg made me realize that even at my age I could go through so many doors into the ancient past and learn how to be a scholar.
Dr. Bauman also had a huge impact. Florence came alive under her guidance in my study abroad course. She made this experience amazing on every level.
Dr. Williamson also had a huge impact. Studying Ancient Egypt under her was like being there. She made the classes fascinating, challenging, and fun. I also benefited from (and thoroughly enjoyed!) hearing first-hand about her own experiences as an Egyptologist.
What advice would you give to an incoming cohort of graduate students?
- You are never too old to go back to school and learn!
- See what you are reading!
- Embrace and enjoy the experience!
What are your current career plans following graduation? What are your long-term career goals?
I am considering post-graduate work, but I have no concrete plans at this time.
