PhD in Cultural Studies
Akina Canady, 2024

Describe your dissertation, thesis, or capstone.
The dissertation explores Black women's experiences with fibroids through a Black feminist lens.
How did you choose your specific area of study?
A background in writing studies and narrative research as well as personal experience with fibroids led to this area of study.
How did your academic experiences in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences impact you?
I met wonderful mentors and grew exponentially on a personal and academic level.
What advice would you give to an incoming cohort of graduate students?
My advice for incoming doctoral students is to find your community and remember your "why." Doctoral study is tough and can often feel lonely, so it's important to always remember why you are on this path and to find mentors and trusted colleagues who will support you along the way.
