BA in Russian and Eurasian Studies

William Jefferson, 2025

William Jefferson

Major: BA in Russian and Eurasian studies with a concentration in Russian language and culture

Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA

Plans after graduation: Jefferson plans to continue to improve his Russian language skills in Russian while acquiring proficiency in more languages such as Spanish. He plans to pursue a career that utilizes his Russian language skills in a diplomatic position.

Most impactful course: Russian 311, a Russian literature class taught entirely in Russian. “Not only did we read these texts, but we also translated the entire works into English. This was particularly fascinating because, while translating word-for-word is often straightforward, capturing the beauty and complexity of literature across linguistic boundaries can be a bit more challenging. However, with Professor Guglielmi’s exceptional guidance, we developed the ability to translate not just the literal meaning of the text, but she imprinted upon us the importance of the message, emotion, and artistic intent the author sought to convey. These skills are essential to producing a meaningful and faithful translation.”

Immersive language learning and team spirit

As an undergrad, Jefferson participated in George Mason’s Men’s lacrosse club team, attended Middlebury’s prestigious Summer Russian Language School. “It was an experience like no other,” he said. “I spent a full two months completely immersed in Russian language where speaking in English was strictly forbidden. It pushed my language skills farther than I ever could have imagined.”
