What was the most impactful class you took in your major?
The most impactful class I took in my major was my SOCI 303: Research Methods, taught by Professor Elizangela Storelli. What made it so impactful was the combination of rigorous assignments, hands-on research experience, and Professor Storelli’s engaging teaching style. The course challenged me to think critically about research design, data collection, and analysis, deepening my understanding of how to conduct meaningful research. This course sparked my passion for research and is one of the main reasons I aspire to pursue a career in sociological research. Professor Storelli’s passion for the subject and her emphasis on real-world applications made the material come alive. The skills I gained in that class have been foundational to my work in research and social justice.
What activities were you involved in during your time at George Mason that impacted you?
One of the most impactful experiences I had at George Mason University was being part of the Social Science Research Lab, where I worked under Wonmai (Maia) Punksungka and Professor Blake Silver. In this role, I gained hands-on experience in analyzing data and collaborating with a team on a project that explored important social issues, particularly those within higher education. This experience deepened my understanding of research methodologies and reinforced my passion for using research as a tool for social change. Working alongside Maia and Professor Silver, I saw firsthand the real-world impact of sociological research. This opportunity not only strengthened my academic foundation but also solidified my desire to pursue a career in research and advocacy for marginalized communities.
What is your most memorable moment at George Mason inside or outside of the classroom?
My most memorable moment at George Mason University was attending the Transfer Open House when I transferred from NOVA. It was such a fun and welcoming experience. I remember receiving great welcome gifts, meeting enthusiastic students and faculty, and hearing insightful perspectives about the university. The energy of the event made me feel instantly at home, and I loved exploring the campus for the first time as an official George Mason student. That day reassured me that I had made the right choice, and it set the stage for an exciting new chapter in my academic journey.
As you are reflecting on your time at George Mason, what is one piece of advice you would give a student who is just starting off on their George Mason journey?
One piece of advice I would give to a student just starting their George Mason journey is to trust yourself and your path. It’s easy to look around and compare your progress to others but remember that your timeline is your own—you are exactly where you need to be. Success doesn’t have a single definition or a strict deadline. What’s meant for you will come at the right time, as long as you stay committed to your growth and remain open to new opportunities. Embrace your journey, celebrate your progress, and trust that everything will fall into place in its own way!
What is your next step after graduation? What are your future plans?
After graduation, my next step is to pursue a master's degree in sociology. I want to continue conducting research and, hopefully, start my own independent research projects. My goal is to use research as a tool to help immigrant communities and contribute to meaningful change in the lives of those in need. I am passionate about exploring social issues and finding ways to advocate for marginalized communities through my work.
Graduate school will allow me to deepen my expertise and further develop the skills needed to make a lasting impact.
