Why did you choose George Mason University and your major or area of study?
I have always been drawn to psychology and the field of mental health. After learning to cope with my own mental health struggles, especially during the pandemic, I felt a calling to use my experiences to listen to and help others.
I chose to attend George Mason after a representative came to my high school. I have always heard of George Mason since it was close to my home town, but never knew much about it other than it was a big commuter school. That day, I heard about how diverse the student population was and how George Mason promotes a diverse culture on campus. I have found that to be true as I near the end of my studies and appreciate the learning experiences and the friendships I have made here.
Are there faculty or staff members who have made a difference thus far during your George Mason career?
Dr. Hawley taught PSYC 325 and did a fantastic job. Hearing his experience as a professional in the field solidified that clinical psychology was the path I wanted to take. It was amazing to be taught clinical psychology from an actual clinical psychologist. And he was a great teacher who cared a lot about his students and his practice.
How do you hope to use your degree and studies in the future?
I hope to go on to get my master's in counseling after I earn my bachelor's in psychology. I would like to become a mental health counselor and one day go on to earn my doctorate in clinical psych, as well, and become a clinical psychologist.
How will the Dean’s Challenge scholarship support your studies?
As someone who pays for their own schooling, the aid from scholarships allows me to feel a little less stressed. I don't have to worry as much about fitting in a ton of hours at work to try and pay off my schooling, while also attending classes, studying, and trying to enjoy campus life.
