How did you decide on the history major?
I have wanted to study history in college since sixth grade. My teacher was fantastic and allowed us to learn in so many different ways, whether that be through field trips, simulations, readings - it honed my love for the subject, and I’ve loved learning history ever since. I was a forensic science major when I first came to Mason but switched to history during the first semester of my freshman year because I knew that I would be happier studying something I loved. There hasn’t been one time that I’ve regretted this decision because I have had incredible experiences in every history class I’ve taken here. The proximity to so many museums gives me such a fantastic privilege that not many other history students have outside of this area.
Are you minoring or double majoring in anything else? If so, how do the two work together – or separately?
I am not currently minoring or double majoring in anything.
What have you learned in a history class that really surprised you/changed your perspective?
I really learned a lot in Dr. Chang’s Post 1949 China class - it widened my worldview. Everything he teaches in that class is valuable, I encourage both history and non-history majors to take it.
Tell us about your dream occupation…
I would love one day to work in a museum to show other people how exciting it can be to learn about history, and to give individuals a chance to learn both important and interesting information for free!
Have you had any internships? Or interesting jobs or volunteer experience? Tell us about it/them.
This summer I will be completing an internship with Dr. Tachco and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, or the DPAA. I also have two jobs on campus, one with Dr. Stearns in the History department assisting with research.
Any accomplishments you’re proud of? Opportunities you’ve taken advantage of? Brag a little!
I will complete my undergraduate degree in three years, meaning I’ll have my bachelor's at 20! I also won both the Donald R. Barr Memorial Endowed Scholarship and the Outstanding Public and Digital History Award at the 2023 History and Art History awards ceremony!
Tell us something people would be surprised to know about you.
I volunteered at my local zoo for four years.
