Greetings!

We launch this edition of the CHSS Digest by reminding everyone to mark their calendars for the State of the College event on Monday, September 27, at 2:30 pm and the CHSS Welcome Back Coffee Hour on Tuesday, September 28, from 9:00 am - 10:00 am. Registration for the latter has been extended through Wednesday, September 22! Please use this link to respond only if you will be able to make it.

The next edition of the Digest will come out on October 5; if you have announcements, resources, or events that you would like to see published therein, please send it to Anne Reynolds (areyno12) by Friday, October 1.

A Letter of Intent, also called a White Paper, Pre-Proposal, Concept Paper, or Quad Chart (hereafter called LOI), is a shortened version of a complete grant proposal. Typically, sponsors will request LOIs to allow them to assess whether or not there is a good match between the proposed project and their interests. Mason will host a screening of Picture a Scientist followed by Q&A at the Johnson Center Cinema. PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
