IIR Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Ismail Nooraddini

Dr. Ismail Nooraddini is a sociologist and child of an Iranian immigrant. Dr. Nooraddini worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Institute for Immigration Research (IIR) from 2017 to 2020 and completed his PhD in Sociology at George Mason University in 2022. He is currently an Analytics Associate Manager at Accenture Federal Services, serving as a survey and methodology consultant for the U.S. Department of State.

Faculty grant writing support

CHSS is partnering with the Office of Research Development to pilot grant writing feedback for faculty. There are two services provided: copyediting and proposal feedback. Faculty with nearly finalized proposals OR previously submitted proposals that did not compete successfully in review will benefit from these pilots. There are still a few spaces left for these pilot programs!

In the months leading up to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning of Roe vs. Wade, pro-choice Jewish advocates claimed that “abortion bans are against our religion." At the 2nd Annual Distinguished Lecture in Judaic Studies talk hosted by the George Mason University Religious Studies Department, Michal Raucher will examine what that statement means, what it’s trying to do, and how it fails to fully capture the Jewish communal conversation around abortion. Drawing on the lived experiences of Jewish women who have had abortions, she offers a new vision of what Jewish pro-choice activism could look like.

On Wednesday, October 25th at 3:00 p.m. in The Bistro (Johnson Center), Dr. Janani Umamaheswar and Dr. Robert Norris (Department of Criminology, Law and Society) will facilitate an interactive panel discussion exploring how art and research can be integrated to advance social justice agendas. Funded by Mason’s Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence (ARIE) initiative, this discussion will feature three artists (Professor Juana Medina, Dr. KC Councilor, and Mr. Sherrill Roland) and focus on how artists and researchers can work together to dismantle systems of social inequality. This event does not require an RSVP, and light refreshments will be served.
