Section Information for Fall 2026

This course explores pre-1800 Europe and its global connections through a combination of theory, historiography, and video games. Students will read scholarly monographs on the Renaissance, early globalization, empire, and revolution, while also playing and analyzing historically themed video games. Games are treated as historical arguments and theoretical models or simulations that encode assumptions about space, power, race, gender, and progress. By pairing historiographical debates with gameplay, students will critically assess how digital media produces historical narratives and how those narratives compare to academic interpretations of the premodern world.
