Elena's Scholarships Support Students' Well-Being

The Center for the Advancement of Well-Being has announced that it is now accepting applications for the Elena's Scholarships program for the 2016-17 academic year.

Elena Prien, BIS '82, endowed undergraduate student scholarships with the goal of enhancing students’ well-being. Open to full-time, undergraduate students from all academic majors, the program will award $1,000 each year to six students, in honor of Prien's children. They will be awarded to students whose lives can benefit from resources to support their well-being in various domains (psychological, emotional, social, purpose, community, and physical, as a few examples). Priority will be given to applicants who are beginning their intentional efforts to cultivate well-being.

The Elena's Scholarships program emphasizes well-being mentoring as well as a financial scholarship. Applicants should be willing and able to participate in one-on-one mentoring with a Mason faculty or staff member who has expertise about well-being. Mentoring will take place about once every three weeks during the fall semester and monthly during spring semester. In addition, scholarship winners receive a financial award of $1,000, with $500 credited to their account on the first day of class for fall semester and another $500 on the first day of classes for spring semester (contingent upon successful participation in the mentoring for fall semester).

Individual mentoring is a key component to this program. The intention of the mentoring is to guide scholarship recipients in their journey to reach higher levels of well-being in their lives – that is, greater meaning and purpose, resilience, vitality, and engagement. Potential applicants are encouraged to learn about Mason's well-being initiative as they consider their responses to the questions on the scholarship application. Information on the initiative may be found on the link to the right.

The scholarship funds can be used for tuition, fees, and/or room and board at George Mason University. Eligible students must be either sophomores, juniors or seniors for the entire 2016-17 academic year and have a minimum overall 2.0 GPA or higher when they apply. The application deadline is March 31, 2016.
