New Century College Becomes the School of Integrative Studies

Effective May 2016, New Century College will become the School of Integrative Studies (SIS). With approval from the George Mason University Board of Visitors, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, and input from faculty, alumni, students and partners, the unit chose a name that more accurately reflects the interdisciplinary, experiential research and study undertaken by its faculty and students.

SIS will remain housed within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and continue to offer its hallmark liberal arts-based education encouraging students to pursue their academic passion. The majors, minors, concentrations and programs created by NCC will remain the same.

New Century College was launched in 1996, and gained recognition for its hands-on, progressive approach to education and research. Its curriculum challenges assumptions, encourages debate and discussion, and allows students to design a course of learning that aligns with their personal and professional interests. The school's new name encapsulates the breadth and character of the educational experience it offers.

All SIS students challenge themselves through internships, field studies and research of consequence. Many SIS courses embed experiential learning in their design, with assignments that extend beyond the classroom. Students connect their education with real-world challenges, gaining competence and confidence as leaders prepared to enter the workforce and make a difference.

“New Century College has always offered Mason’s students coursework that integrates perspectives from multiple disciplines and the opportunity to apply that learning beyond the university,” said Deborah Boehm-Davis, dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences. “The new name reflects that the School of Integrative Studies embodies this unique integrative pedagogy, paired with the opportunity to address the needs of society and the world, thereby building effective future leaders.”

Interim associate dean of NCC, Kelly Dunne said, “Our new name encompasses the full spectrum of what our faculty and students are charged to do: put their passion to action as they engage with the complex social, global and environmental challenges facing our world.”
