The Mathy Junior Faculty Awards in the Arts and Humanities

For Fall 2015 or Spring 2016

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) invites applications for the Mathy Junior Faculty Awards in the Arts and Humanities

This program is open to tenure track assistant professors in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences or the College of Visual and Performing Arts who are in their first to fourth year at George Mason University as of the Fall of 2015. 

These awards are designed to help promising junior faculty become published scholars or active artists. Mathy Awards provide a one semester release from teaching in either the Fall 2015 or Spring 2016 semesters. The proposed research or artistic activity must be in the arts or humanities.

Application Process:

Applicants should submit the following:

  • A proposal narrative (no more than five pages) which includes:
    • A description of the proposed research or creative project written for an academic but non-specialist audience
    • The place and value of the proposed research or creative project with respect to the field
    • The qualifications of the applicant to carry out the research or creative project
  • A curriculum vita
  • Three letters of support, at least one from a George Mason University faculty member
  • Representative examples of recently published scholarship or creative work
  • Any supplemental materials the applicant believes will strengthen the proposal (for example, draft chapters of the planned monograph, preliminary sketches)

Application Deadline: 4:00 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2015

Application Submission: Applications must be received by the deadline. Materials should either be mailed to the Mathy Junior Faculty Awards Program, College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Office, MS 3A3, or hand delivered to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences dean’s office, College Hall 100. Late applications will not be considered.

Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously received a Mathy Award. Faculty accepting this award must remain members of George Mason University’s faculty for twelve months following the research semester that is taken.
