College’s Sports Courses Go for Gold

Go the distance. Take one for the team. “He . . . could . . . go . . . all . . . the . . . way!”

Sports are everywhere. Whether you’re participating or watching, they excite, entertain, teach, and connect fans to one another.

But athletics are in the news, too, and not just in the sports websites and magazines. With recent controversies in the National Football League over domestic violence, questions about fake "paper classes" to boost athletes' grades, and concerns over player safety and concussions, it is clear that the subject of sports covers far more than the scoreboard would indicate.

How would you like to spend a course period talking about sports and getting credit for it?

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences has put together BOOM Shakalaka, a collection of courses to be offered in Spring 2015 that take on sports in society from the standpoint of history, the media, and as a machine for creating modern-day myths. Each of these classes is a full-credit course that stands alone and would make an excellent elective, no matter what your major is.
