University to Host Conference on Global Implications of American Civil War

Registration is now open for the 2014 Signature Conference, The American Civil War in a Global Context. The conference, sponsored by the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission, is the sixth in an annual series. It will be chaired by Provost and professor of history Peter Stearns, and held at George Mason University on Saturday, May 31, 2014.

Historians of international acclaim will discuss the impact of the Civil War in areas ranging from the global cotton trade, to international abolition efforts, to changes in the future of military operations, to the implications of the Civil War as one of the first wars fought in an industrial age.

The program looks at the Civil War through a different lens. An intense conflict within the United States, the war also had international ramifications. Considering the war from a global perspective yields surprising and unexpected insights about the Civil War – and the United States – within the history of wider world.

The registration fee is $15 for the conference only, or $25 for the conference and lunch. Lunch features a special Q & A session with members and staff of the Virginia Civil War 150 Commission and a special recognition for attendees of all six conferences.

Advance registration will be open until May 1, 2014, or until capacity is reached. Please see the links to the right for more information and online registration.
