The Sigma Chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, George Mason University’s branch of the National Communication Honor Society, capped off its semester in grand style, welcoming more than 50 students into its ranks on May 7, 2011.
Brad Mello, the associate director for educational initiatives at the National Communication Association, delivered the keynote speech. He was inducted into Mason’s chapter as the 2011 honorary member.
Chapter officers recognized the new members individually, calling out their names and presenting them with certificates of achievement. In addition, Susan Tomasovic, faculty advisor and communication professor, and Gary Kreps, chair of the communication department, spoke at the event, highlighting the excellence of the honor society.
“This organization has been a very rewarding experience for many of our members,” Tomasovic said. “In the past, our chapter has won the national chapter of the year award and the [university’s] outstanding academic club of the year award, and we served as the national newsletter editor.”
She added, “George Mason University communication majors have been elected to national offices as presidents, vice presidents and secretaries.”
To be eligible for membership, communication majors must have already completed 60 credit hours and earned at least a 3.0 grade point average while doing so. In addition, the student must have taken at least 12 credits of communication coursework, earning a 3.25 grade point average in these courses.
Michael Carvajal, a senior communication major, is the organization’s current president.
