Global Interdisciplinary Programs (GIP) and the Department of History and Art History are teaming up to show Waste Land, on Tuesday, April 26 at 3:00 p.m. in the Johnson Center Cinema. The film is an award-winning documentary set in Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest garbage dump.
The film follows Vik Muniz, an artist who works with “catadores,” who collect recyclable materials from the dump to create photographic images of themselves, crafted completely from the garbage. The film won the Sundance Film Festival Audience Award for World Cinema Documentary and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
Waste Land is the latest film in the GIP’s spring 2011 film series. The series’ films touch on a variety of topics integral to the global experience.
“Because the programs that make up the GIP address multiple global issues and perspectives, the selected films are intended to present a broad picture of the human experience in non-traditional settings,” said Erin McSherry, program assistant for global affairs. “Although they carry a message about perseverance, the films will also touch on such varied topics as Latin American culture and history, human rights, art, war and violence, women’s issues, economics, and environmental concerns.”
