Baum Recognized by Student Organization for Service

Evan Baum helps students on a regular basis. Now, he is recognized for it.

Baum, assistant dean for undergraduate programs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, is named as an honorary distinguished member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a student-run national honor society with a chapter.

Typically, the honor society invites high-achieving freshmen and sophomore students to be members, but each year they induct honorary members, ranging from professionals in the community to Mason staff and faculty. Potential nominees must be committed to scholarship, leadership, service or more than one of those qualities.

“I nominated him because he is a great example of service,” said Lauren Rose, executive vice president of the local chapter and a junior global affairs major. “He makes sure that he is available to the students. Not only does he help in any way that he can, he also takes the time to help point you in the right direction for further information. He is patient, kind, and caring.”

To be considered for the award, potential candidates must be nominated by a member of the chapter’s executive board. All seven board members voted to honor Baum.

“I’m tremendously honored and humbled by being recognized in this manner from the students in the National Society for Collegiate Scholars,” Baum said. “It came as quite a shock when I was first notified.”

“We have tremendous students at Mason, and I enjoy working hard to make their experiences here as best as they can be.”
