IRB updates

Office Hours

George Mason University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) will be hosting virtual office hours on Thursdays this Fall. IRB staff will be available for one-on-one drop-in consultation via Zoom on Thursdays from 2:00pm-3:30 pm on a first come, first served basis. To better serve the community and meet with as many people as possible, meeting times will be limited to ten minutes. IRB Office Hours will not be held on GMU holidays or during other University closures.

MTurk is Retired

The survey platform MTurk has been retired as of September 30, 2026, and is no longer in use. If your study is ongoing and uses this platform to collect data, please be sure to update the protocol as necessary to reflect the new platform to be used.

For more information about the closure, please visit MTurk's FAQ page: https://www.mturk.com/help

Student Research as Class Assignments & IRB Presentations

Do you have students who will conduct research this year?  Will your students complete research projects as a class assignment?  If so, please take some time to review the Classroom Projects SOP to understand whether your students’ research projects will require IRB review.  For students inexperienced in conducting research, it is important for faculty and instructors to be familiar with this policy so they may provide guidance to students.

If you have questions regarding if IRB is required or would like to schedule an IRB presentation for classes, student groups, and department meetings, contact the IRB team to schedule your presentation.

Reminders

Templates – Remember to download new copies of IRB templates for each new project you submit. The newest protocol update is the Biomedical protocol which is now available on the IRB website and in the RAMP document library.
