Sean McAlister honored as 2025 CHSS distinguished alumni in higher education

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is proud to honor Sean McAlister, DA '99, with the Distinguished Alumni Award in higher education. 

McAlister serves as chief learning officer at the U.S. Department of Commerce, leading professional development for more than 48,000 employees across 12 bureaus in 120 countries. With more than 25 years in public service and international trade, he champions learning strategies that strengthen a globally engaged workforce.

His approach blends strategic talent planning and support for mission-ready professionals through skill-based learning, leadership training, and organizational development.  

Outside of government, McAlister is committed to advancing peace and economic development and is an active leader in Rotary International, reflecting a life of service and global impact.
