New research security training requirements

Coming October 2025

Effective October 10, 2025, all faculty that plan to submit grant proposals to NSF must complete research security training modules before submitting a proposal. The Research Security Training is designed to create awareness of, and protect against, external threats and risks to U.S. funded research that support the research at Mason.

Note--all senior personnel listed in the grant application must have completed the training before the proposal can be submitted.

Based on current Federal Sponsor Guidance, for DOE, NSF (effective 10/10/25), NIH (effective 1/26/2026) proposals, all proposal key personnel must complete the Research Security Training (Condensed) module in Mason LEAPS, before the proposal is submitted to OSP in compliance with the 4-day deadline. Therefore, the Research Security Training (Condensed) training module should be completed no later than 6-days prior to the Sponsor’s deadline.

This training will need to be completed annually and can take 60 minutes. We advise you to complete the training as you have time and not wait until grant submission time, to reduce the stress at proposal submission time.

Note the NIH has deferred the required Other Support Training requirement, which was supposed to be effective October 1, 2025. We will tell you when the date is announced.
