Dean's Note - October 2009

George Mason University has changed a lot since I started my career here more than twenty years ago. In that time, I have watched the university shift from a local community school to one with national merit. As our identity continues to change, I have noticed that the level of collegiate pride among students and alumni has as well.

Each semester I witness this shift and hear, first hand, from students, about their impressions of George Mason. One way I am successful in this sort of conversation is through a program called "Lunch with the Dean." Monthly, I invite fifteen students to have lunch with me at an on-campus restaurant.

During this time together, I listen to student’s thoughts on what is working and what needs improvement on both the college and university level. I find this extremely illuminating when planning curriculum and school strategy for the following semester.

I wish I could have lunch and similar conversations with you and other alumni. Because I don't often have this opportunity, I would like your feedback, via e-mail, on George Mason University.

  • What have you been doing since graduation? What was your major and graduation year?
  • How did George Mason University help prepare you for your current career?
  • What can we do to better foster Patriot Pride among alumni?

I appreciate the comments we have already received over the past few months and hope that you will take a moment to look over these questions and send us your response.

Sincerely,

Jack Censer
Dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences
