On March 20, 2010, history will come alive for America’s youth right here at George Mason University. National History Day gives more than half a million kids nation-wide the chance to engage in a competition that encourages discovery of historic, cultural and social experiences of the past.
Much of the event on campus will be centered around a competition that asks middle school and elementary school students to show off their research in one of five ways: as a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a web site. The work is judged by professional educators and historians.
The competition brings together students from Arlington, Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier, Westmoreland, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Caroline, Northumberland, Richmond County, Lancaster, Alexandria, Falls Church, Fredericksburg, Manassas, and Manassas Park.
The competition is governed by the rules of National History Day.
The two best entries in each category, and in each age division, at the District competition qualify for the Virginia History Day contest, which will be held in April in Williamsburg, Va. The two best entries in each category, and in each age division, at the State competition qualify for the national competition, which will be held at the University of Maryland, College Park.
