The Folger Institute is a center for advanced research in the early modern humanities at the Folger Shakespeare Library. The following spring and summer programs will be offered at Folger this year:
- Empires, Law, and the Law of Nations (in-person weekend seminar) May 2nd-3rd - great for anyone interested in the 16th-18th centuries more generally, not just in Europe, as well as of course anyone interested in the law
- Introduction to English Paleography (weeklong skills course) May 27th-31st - great for graduate students and early career faculty who want to brush up their skills at reading historical handwriting
- A Folger Orientation to Research Methods and Agendas (weeklong skills course) August 12th-16th - a hands-on "how to get the most out of special collections and archives" course that's great for graduate students
- Special bonus program: Digital Approaches to Early Modern Books (May 21st-24th) at the Price Lab for Digital Humanities at the University of Pennsylvania - five Folger Consortium graduate students will be admitted and given $1,000 each to help defray the costs of getting up to Philly.
Applications to Folger programs should address what the Folger likes to call “the give and the get” – how will others in the program benefit from your participation, as well as how you will benefit from participating in the program. Applications are submitted online and requires the applicant to complete text fields to append a statement of research plans and a CV. A letter of support on behalf of the applicant is also required and should be submitted through the online application portal.
