Folger Institute fellowships

Deadline January 15, 2025

The Folger Institute is a center for advanced research in the early modern humanities at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Folger Institute offers research fellowships that are designed for scholarly research that would benefit from Folger’s vast and varied collections of printed books, manuscripts, prints, drawings, photographs, paintings, and other works of art as well as performance history from the 15th through 18th centuries.

The Folger Institute Short-Term Fellowships are designed to support a concentrated period of full-time work on research projects that draw on the strengths of the Folger’s collections and programs. The fellowship supports scholars whose work would benefit from significant primary research for one, two or three months, with a monthly stipend of $5000 per month in residence and $4000 per month for virtual. Applications are due January 15, 2025.

The Folger Institute Artistic Research Fellowships are open to all artists whose work would benefit from significant primary research related to the histories, concepts, art, and objects of the early modern world (ca. 1400-1800) and its legacies. Artistic applicants may apply for one, two, or three months of research support and can take their fellowships fully onsite, virtual, or a combination of the two. Fellowship awards are $4000 per virtual month and $5000 per onsite month, and may be taken any time between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026. Applications are due January 15, 2025.

Any faculty interested in applying for a Folger Institute Short-Term Fellowship or the Folger Institute Artistic Research Fellowship should submit a CHSS Pre-Award Request for Assistance Form
