January 1 brings new hourly minimum wage schedule

Per new Virginia legislation approved by the General Assembly, the hourly minimum wage in Virginia will gradually increase according to the following schedule:

  • $11.00 on Jan. 1, 2022
  • $12.00 on Jan. 1, 2023
  • The gradual increases to $13.50 on Jan. 1, 2025, and $15.00 on Jan. 1, 2026, will be contingent on the General Assembly's enactment by July 1, 2024.

The rates for impacted individuals whose current rates are below the new threshold on January 1, 2022, will be automatically increased on the effective date. Impacted individuals include student wage, work-study and non-student wage with current hourly rates below $11.00 per hour. Additional information for future increases will be provided prior to the effective dates.
