OSCAR Opportunities and Resources

The Center for Humanities Research recently reminded us that Mason's Office of Student Scholarship, Creative Activities, and Research matches undergraduate students to research assistant positions, as well as offers faculty members mentoring opportunities for student research.

OSCAR Research Assistant Program

OSCAR works with Mason's Office of Student Financial Aid to allow undergraduate students awarded Federal Work-Study funding to use their award to work with faculty, staff, and university programs on research projects.

Faculty members can request an undergraduate research assistant through OSCAR, an opportunity that comes at no cost to the faculty member or department. The OSCAR website offers clear guidance on creating a position description and hiring an assistant. The CHR said, "Not only is this a great way to get some research assistance, but it’s an excellent way to help our undergraduates learn about humanities research and the very transportable skills one acquires doing this kind of research."

Undergraduate Research Scholars Program Mentorships

The CHR also noted that OSCAR also sponsors a program to make faculty members eligible to receive a stipend for mentoring undergraduates in their research. The Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URSP) is designed to give undergraduates an authentic research, creative, or scholar experience under the guidance of a mentor. Proposals for spring semester 2021 are now open.
