2020 Provost's Summer Team Impact Projects Fund CHSS-Led Research

The Office of the Provost has announced the recipients of its  Summer Team Impact Grants. Of the eight proposals that will be funded, five include College of Humanities and Social Sciences faculty members.

The grants, managed by the Office of Undergraduate Education and OSCAR, fund summer team projects based around a central theme, a research question or problem. They will be led by at least two faculty members with support from additional faculty members and/or doctoral students, and will include six to ten undergraduate students to actively engage with the project throughout the summer.

The projects highlight innovative curricular ideas that enhance cross-unit, multidisciplinary undergraduate and graduate curriculum development activities, or are tied directly to a Mason Impact signature program: research and creative activities, civic engagement, global education, or entrepreneurship. Of 19 submissions, eight projects were selected for funding. The successful projects that are led by CHSS faculty members include:

The Well-being of Social Justice and Human Rights College Student Activists at the Washington Metropolitan Area: Cher Chen (School of Integrative Studies, College of Humanities and Social Sciences), Xiaomei Cai (Department of Communication, College of Humanities and Social Sciences), and Graziella McCarron (School of Integrative Studies, College of Humanities and Social Sciences).

Building an Acoustic and Articulatory Corpus of French as an additional Language: Vincent Chanethom (Department of Modern and Classical Languages, College of Humanities and Social Sciences), and Harim Kwon (Department of English – Linguistics Program, College of Humanities and Social Sciences).

Development and Evaluation of Electronic Cigarette Counter-Marketing: Matthew Rossheim (College of Health and Human Services) and Xiaoquan Zhao (Department of Communication, College of Humanities and Social Sciences).

Dying Alone: Social Isolation among Older People in the U.S. and Japan: Megumi Inoue (College of Health and Human Services), Naoru Koizumi (Schar School of Policy and Government), Emily Ihara (Health and Human Services), and Cortney Hughes-Rinker (Department of Sociology and Anthropology, College of Humanities and Social Sciences).
