CHSS Alumnus Awarded for Excellence

Mason prepares students to meet the demands of their field though creativity, collaboration, problem solving, and action. Our alumni are the finest testament to that continued mission. Each year, the Celebration of Distinction applauds alumni that exemplify excellence in their chosen field. Congratulations to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Tom LeGro.

Tom LeGro, BA English ’98, MFA Creative Writing ’01, is a senior video producer at The Washington Post. He oversees an award-winning team of video editors on the foreign, national security, technology and style desks.

LeGro began his career at The Post in 2000 as a news aide and later became a copy editor. He left the paper in 2006 to work as a reporter-producer for "PBS NewsHour," covering arts and culture, before returning to The Post in 2013.

In 2018, LeGro was part of the team awarded a Pulitzer Prize in investigative reporting for coverage of the Senate candidacy of Roy Moore and a subsequent effort to discredit The Post's reporting. At The Post, he has been on teams that have won two Edward R. Murrow Awards, the Robin Toner Prize, a Webby Award, and an Emmy nomination.

“Tom is a prime example of a successful CHSS alumnus who has used his MFA degree in the pursuit of truth through his career at The Post,” said Mark Hall, Assistant Director of Development in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. “He’s also served as a volunteer to the college’s student mentoring events, helping to guide our current students as they look to their future.  This university-wide recognition is certainly well deserved.”

“We are very grateful for Tom’s willingness to mentor current CHSS students, and delighted to see his career accomplishments recognized by the university in this year’s Celebration of Distinction,” said Ann Ardis, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

A native of Arlington, Va., LeGro lives in Washington, D.C., with his wife and daughter.
