New Program for 2018: Accelerated Master’s Degree in Communication

In fall 2018, Mason’s Department of Communication will begin accepting applications for its first accelerated master’s program. Successful completion of the program will allow a student to obtain a bachelor’s degree and a master of arts degree in communication in five years.

Richard Craig, director of the master’s program in communication as well as the new accelerated master’s degree program, is pleased that this educational path is available to Mason’s students. Citing the variety of successful accelerated programs on Mason’s campus, as well as the interest that the Communication Department has seen among its own students, Craig said that the department began mapping out the program with Mason’s Office of Admissions in the summer of 2017.

“The benefit to students is that they will have access to master’s level theory while they are still working at the undergraduate level,” he explained.

The program will be open to any Mason student with a qualifying GPA, who has completed between 75 to 100 credits. “We think that a communication MA can be a complement to any number of degree programs,” says Craig. “Though any student can apply, we make sure they have a strong communication foundation.”

Parallel to the structure of the traditional master’s program in communication, the accelerated MA includes coursework in four specializations: strategic communication/public relations, health communication, science communication, or individualized communication studies.
