U.S. News & World Report recently released their 2019 “Best Graduate School Rankings,” with five College of Humanities and Social Sciences programs making the top 90 in their respective divisions.

George Mason’s criminology program broke the top 20 of graduate criminology programs, placing at #11 of the programs considered. The program tied with Ivy League’s University of Pennsylvania and placed ahead of fellow Washington D.C. area school, American University. The history program took the #44 spot out of all ranked programs, beating out the likes of George Washington University and Howard University.

“The ranking of our criminology program reflects the tremendous progress our program has made since starting in 2005,” said David Wilson, faculty member and chair, Department of Criminology, Law and Society. “We have a highly productive faculty who are doing internationally recognized work of high impact in terms of both the criminal justice system practice and policy. We are an up-and-coming department that fully expects to rise in the rankings in future years.”

In addition to criminology and history, Mason’s economics program ranked #78, sociology came in at #80, and psychology placed at #90 of all programs eligible to be considered.

“It is exciting to see external recognition of our programs,” said Interim Senior Associate Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shannon N. Davis. “These programs are national and international leaders because of the research of consequence, entrepreneurial projects, and transformative partnerships they produce – all while maintaining the highest of academic standards.”
