When are you graduating?

Spring 2024

Describe your dissertation, thesis, or capstone:

Under the guidance of Dr. Gary Kreps, I completed my semester-long thesis, titled: Mindfulness event attendance on college campuses: Mixed Methods Exploratory Study. I used a mixed methods approach where I surveyed the student population on their perceptions about mindfulness events on campus and I interviewed campus offices to understand their planning and promotional strategies to gain student participation at their mindfulness events. A major finding was that students are not aware of mindfulness sessions on campus. A key implication of the study was to carefully plan mindfulness events where students can derive maximize benefit within the few minutes they get to learn and interact with the campus offices and organizations.

How did you choose your specific area of study?

I owe gratitude to my dear friend Sister Antonia and to my mentor Sister Jenna, for their support throughout my studies. Having worked with them in the area of mindfulness, I was intrigued by how people perceive and better their conversations. My interest in interpersonal, strategic, and mindful communication led me to Masters in Communication as the field itself is much deeper than everyday talk. To be able to experience the nexus of theory and practice in classrooms and in my work at the Communication Center, was a blessing!

How did your academic experiences in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences impact you?

The professors in the Comm Department provided a safe space to learn, be curious, and to explore different areas within Communication, as per my interest. I was supported along the way.

Of which accomplishment(s) during your time at Mason are you most proud?

I took immense value in my role as a Graduate Assistant at the Communication Center. My supervisor, Shelby Broberg, was the best to learn from.

I have enjoyed opportunities to strengthen various skills as I wrote articles with the IVth Estate, started my student organization 'Raja Yoga Meditation Club', presented workshops and research at national conferences, and conducted research for my thesis and through my work.

Are there faculty or staff members who made a difference during your Mason career?

I really appreciate and respect everyone in the department. If I am to extend special thanks, it would be to Dr. Richard Craig for guiding me throughout the program and providing a safe space for expression of ideas, to Dr. Gary Kreps who directed me in my thesis, and to Shelby Broberg who was there with me every step of the way helping me navigate work and studies.

What advice would you give to an incoming cohort of graduate students?

This is something I learned from my mentor, Sister Jenna: Just as a car requires fuel, never underestimate the importance of recharging your own soul. Find your charging station—be it in friendships, family, or passions that ignite your spirit. Don't go with low battery for too long. During stressful & happy moments, surround yourself with positive energy! Make meditation a habit.

What are your current career plans following graduation? What are your long-term career goals?

I am looking forward to applying my academic and work experience in real life. My long-term career goal is to mindfully guide internal and external communication of a large business house for maximum meaningful impact.
