Describe your dissertation or thesis (if you completed one):

My thesis, “The Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum: A Case Study of a Tribal Museum in the 21st Century,” focuses on a museum on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. The paper explores issues of  ownership, narrative, authority, and accessibility as they relate to the current relationships of the local museum and the Sicangu Lakota tribe. This thesis presents ways to increase community engagement and capitalize on the opportunities for outside partnerships, and it illustrates steps that need to be taken to begin the process of decolonizing the museum for the benefit of the St. Francis Mission and most importantly the Sicangu Lakota people.

How did your academic experiences in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences impact you?

I greatly enjoyed my time as a student in the Folklore Program. My academic experiences allowed me to engage in a field I am passionate about and continue to build upon my humanities and social sciences background from my undergraduate experience.

What accomplishment(s) during your time at Mason are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my thesis. My thesis allowed me to find my own academic voice and to trust that my original research is worth writing down and sharing. It can be nerve wrecking to submit research in a field filled with scholars you admire. It can be an intimidating process, but my committee members instilled confidence in me and allowed me to trust that my work is valuable.

Are there faculty or staff members who made a difference during your Mason career? Please give an example of this impact if possible.

Absolutely! I would like to thank all of the fabulous Folklore faculty at Mason. I would especially like to thank my supervisor, Dr. Benjamin Gatling, for his continued support and my committee chair, Dr. Lisa Gilman, who has been an incredible mentor for me!

What advice would you give to an incoming cohort of graduate students?

I would encourage the incoming cohort of graduate students to truly pursue what you love. Surround yourself with people who build you up and support your academic, professional, and personal goals.

What are your current career plans following graduation? What are your long-term career goals?

I am currently on the hunt for a job in the museum world or the non-profit sector. I am interesting in pursuing a career in the realm of public folklore and interacting with the public through educational programming and events that allow people to form connections in their communities.
