2026 NEH funding opportunities

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has published a notice on their website that anticipates a late spring application deadline for their fellowship programs.  

NEH Fellowships are competitive awards granted to individual scholars pursuing humanities projects that embody exceptional research, rigorous analysis and clear writing. The application for a 2027 NEH Fellowship is anticipated to open January 15, 2026 with a deadline of May 10, 2026. The fellowships provide recipients with time to conduct research to produce books, critical editions, digital resources or publication, peer-reviewed articles, and/or translation with annotations or critical apparatus. The fellowship will provide up to $60,000 for a period of six to twelve months during the period of June 1, 2027-November 1, 2028. 

NEH Fellowship for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan is a joint activity of the Japan-United States Friendship Commission (JUSFC) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The goals of the program are to promote Japan studies in the United States, to encourage U.S.-Japanese scholarly exchange, and to foster the next generation of Japan scholars in the United States. The application for a 2027 NEH Fellowship for Advanced Social Science Research on Japan is anticipated to open January 15, 2026 with a deadline of April 20, 2026. The fellowship will provide up to $60,000 for a period of six to twelve months during the period of January 1, 2027-September 1, 2027
