Homecoming Event; Non-Fiction On The Fly!
Monday, February 13, 2023 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM EST
Virtual - Zoom
Explore the world of creative writing! Join us for an interactive and fun session all ages. Professors Art Taylor and Gregg Wilhelm will lead a discussion on creative nonfiction—what does that phrase mean?— and host a writing sprint with Mason professor Steph Liberatore, MFA ’14, and Mason MFA student Natalie Plahuta writing flash nonfiction on the fly based on a prompt chosen by attendees. Audience members can also try their own hand at the challenge. We’ll hear some of your storytelling attempts, then listen to what our guest authors created.

Steph Liberatore’s essays have appeared in River Teeth, Sweet: A Literary Confection, Cream City Review, Inside Higher Ed, and elsewhere. She’s won fellowships for her creative nonfiction from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and done residencies at the Vermont Studio Center. Steph got her MFA in Creative Nonfiction in 2014 from George Mason University, where she now teaches creative nonfiction, literature, and composition. When she’s not working on her memoir or chasing after her two young kids, she’s getting ready to launch a new literary journal for flash nonfiction. Find her online at stephliberatore.com or on Twitter at @stephliberatore.
Natalie Plahuta is in her third year of pursuing her MFA in Creative Nonfiction at George Mason University, where she is the Nonfiction Editor for the intersectional feminist literary journal So To Speak. In 2020, she graduated with her Bachelor’s in English and a minor in Asian Studies from UNC-Chapel Hill. In 2018, she won the first prize for poetry in the Cynthia DeFord Adams Literary Contest. Her nonfiction has appeared in Sweet Tree Review, and her fiction was published as part of The Other Folk’s Fables for the Dying series. Although she currently resides in Northern Virginia, Natalie frequently visits her home in Raleigh, North Carolina.
