Dr. Kazuo Morimoto's talk covers the topic of his book, recently translated into English from Japanese. Dr. Morimoto's research focuses on the study of Seyyed and Sharifs, kinsfolk of the prophet found "in every corner of muslim communities all over the world." His presentation goes beyond the geographical range of Seyyeds and Sharifs and uncovers their diversity in social and religious standards. He demonstrates this diversity through examples of Seyyed and Sharifs varying from current world leaders to the arts.
Kazuo Morimoto received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo. He is an Associate Professor of the Division of West Asian Studies at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, Tokyo University. His research interests include comparative studies on sayyids and sharifs in different Muslim societies, historiographical studies on the genealogical literature of sayyids and sharifs, history of Shi’ism and the social history of Iran after Islam. He currently serves as the Executive Editor of the International Journal of Asian Studies and a member of the editorial boards of both the Society for Near Eastern Studies in Japan and the series Persian and Shi’ite Studies.
