What was the most impactful class you took in your major?
The most impactful class I've taken for my major was ENGH 308 (Theory and Inquiry: Toxic Humanities) with Professor Jessica Hurley. Not only did my ability to read and understand challenging texts grow exponentially, but the enthusiasm with which Professor Hurley and my classmates engaged with each other and with the material was incredibly inspiring. I feel that my worldview has expanded since taking that class in the Fall 2023 semester.
What activities were you involved in during your time at Mason that impacted you?
I joined the English Honors program last semester and am currently working on my thesis for the 401 class. I've really enjoyed the thesis writing class so far, largely for the camaraderie between the students in the small class and the variety of interests represented in each of their projects. It's been a unique experience spending an entire semester working on a single project and watching it come together step-by-step. This class in particular has taught me how to stay in dialogue with my professors as well as other scholars around the world from whom I draw knowledge on my chosen topic. I never thought I'd be able to write about my enthusiasm for silly little Internet videos for a college class, but this class has shown me all the fun in academic writing.
What is your most memorable “Mason moment?”
I'll fondly remember the tea parties that Dr. Burek threw for her ENGH 305 class on peer review days. Sipping tea and eating cookies makes having one's work reviewed feel so much less daunting! As a new transfer student, those tea parties helped me feel welcome at Mason.
As you are reflecting on your time at Mason, what is one piece of advice you would give a student who is just starting off on their Mason journey?
Remember that you are responsible for your own success. Attend your classes, do your assignments, build relationships with your professors and peers, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it!
What is your next step after graduation? What are your future plans?
After graduation I'm going to work while writing creatively and developing my hobbies and interests in my spare time. Over the course of my life I'd like to try out a variety of roles in publishing, creative
