The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, as an Institutional Sponsor of the National Humanities Center, is pleased to announce an opportunity for our faculty to seek nomination to participate in the NHC's Summer Residency Program. The 2026 Summer Residency Program will be held June 1-June 26, 2026 at the National Humanities Center in Durham, North Carolina.
The NHC Summer Residency is a competitive program with a capped enrollment of 40 participants out of about 200 interested applicants. Nominees must have a scholarly humanities project that is underway, and a clear plan for how the four-week residency will advance the work. Nominees must have completed a PhD or equivalent terminal degree.
An internal review will be held by CHSS to select two faculty nominees to forward for NHC consideration for the 2026 Summer Residency program.
Interested scholars must submit the following information by email attachment no later than Friday, November 7 at 5 p.m. to chssadr@gmu.edu.
- One page abstract of project
- Timeline and plan for work to be competed during four-week residency
- Two-page abbreviated CV
CHSS will notify applicants no later than November 21 of the outcome of their proposal. CHSS will then communicate the name(s) of the selected scholar(s) to the National Humanities Center by late November 2025.
In late November 2025, the NHC will send each nominated scholar a unique link to the application portal.
- Complete applications must be submitted by early January 2026.
- The 40 participants will be competitively selected from this pool of applicants.
The cost of a summer residency is $8,000 and covers housing and shuttle service, meals, a private study, and library and administrative support. The CHSS Dean's office will cover these expenses.
