NIH's new unified strategy and funding priorities

In recent months, multiple federal agencies have been implementing new goals and funding priorities to align with overall funding goals. The director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, recently announced the agency’s revised funding priorities for the upcoming fiscal year.

The following categories have been selected by the NIH to prioritize:

  • Training future biomedical scientists
  • Replication and reproducibility
  • Real-World Data Platform
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Nutrition
  • Furthering our understanding of autism
  • Alternative testing models
  • Promoting research focused on scientifically valid, measurable health outcomes
  • Shifting to solution-oriented approaches in health disparities research
  • Improving oversight of NIH funds going to foreign research institutions
  • Ensuring evidence-based health care for children and teenager identifying as transgender
  • Implementing advances in HIV/AIDS research

The NIH plans to maintain its support of research across the full spectrum of biomedical research topics. For more information on these research priorities, please visit Dr. Bhattacharya’s statement “Advancing NIH’s Mission Through a Unified Strategy”.

In addition, beginning in fiscal year 2026 (October 1, 2025), the NIH will no longer post Notice of Funding Opportunities in the NIH Guide. Please be on the lookout for the list of recent NIH updates, along with the NIH Unified Strategies that will be posted soon on the CHSS Research Listserv.
