Robyn Mehlenbeck, professor of psychology at George Mason University and the director of George Mason’s Center for Community Mental Health (CCMH), was awarded the Association of Psychology Training Clinics’ (APTC) Clinic Director Mentor Award at the APTC’s annual conference in Nashville last month. The award recognizes an APTC Training Clinic Director who demonstrates extraordinary mentorship of another training clinic directors. Mehlenbeck was nominated by her peers and selected by the APTC awards committee based on her commitment to being a mentor within the organization and is known as the “mentor of mentors” within APTC. The APTC is the national organization for directors of psychology training clinics that are associated with pre-doctoral graduate training programs in professional psychology clinical, community, counseling, clinical child, and school psychology at regionally accredited universities.
Mehlenbeck is a board-certified child and adolescent clinical psychologist and Fellow of the American Psychological Association, who specializes in working with children with medical conditions, utilizing a family systems approach. Her research has focused on weight management for Latino youth and families and working with children with Type I Diabetes. Mehlenbeck also consults at Inova Children’s Hospital in the pediatric endocrine clinic.
As director of George Mason’s Center of Community Mental Health, Mehlenbeck provides training and mentorship to psychology undergraduate and graduate students. The Center for Community Health is the primary training clinic for George Mason doctoral candidates in clinical psychology, as well as students in other behavioral health disciplines. CCMH provides evidence-based, accessible, affordable and culturally sensitive therapy and testing services to the Northern Virginia community.
