Celebrating 40 Years of Communication Excellence
GMU Department of Communication 40th Anniversary & GMU Insight Committee 20th Anniversary

On September 14, 2024, the Department of Communication at George Mason University proudly hosted a 40th anniversary celebration, which brought together alumni, faculty, and staff, to commemorate four decades of academic excellence and innovation. The event, held in the Horizon Hall atrium, drew approximately 120 attendees, all eager to reconnect and reflect on the department's remarkable journey.

The celebration was emceed by the esteemed Marcella Robertson, BA Communication ’11, prominent Anchor/Reporter for WUSA9, and her engaging presence set a lively tone for the event.

The festivities kicked off with welcoming remarks from Ann Ardis, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, with insights on the role of communication in fostering critical thinking and civic engagement. She highlighted the department's commitment to preparing students for careers that matter in society.

A lineup of distinguished guest speakers followed, each sharing unique perspectives and experiences that illustrated the impact of the Department of Communication. Professor Emeritus Don Boileau, reminisced about the early days of the program, recounting how it has evolved and expanded over the years. His reflections were met with applause as he recognized the hard work and dedication of both past and present faculty members who “built bridges” with other units on campus and beyond.

Lamar Butler, BA Communication ’06, current director of player development for George Mason Men’s Basketball Program, shared how his communication skills have been pivotal in his career. His journey from student to professional inspired many attendees, showcasing the diverse paths that graduates of the program can take, while giving major kudos to faculty member, Susan Tomasovic.

Current doctoral students Jordan Lear, BA Communication ’22, MA ’23, and Doran Tucker provided insights into their life journeys that led them to the department. Their enthusiasm for their studies resonated with both current students and alumni, creating a sense of continuity and excitement for the future.

Communication undergraduate student and aspiring broadcast journalist, Brandyn Fragosa, spoke passionately about his experiences and the transformative impact of the department on his academic journey. He represented the next generation of communication professionals, eager to make their mark in the field.

Carolyn Cuppernull, a member of the Insight Committee, highlighted the importance of community engagement and collaboration in the department’s efforts. Her perspective underscored the value of partnerships in advancing communication scholarship and practice.

Finally, Kim Meltzer, chair of the Communication Department, expressed gratitude to all those who have contributed to the department's success over the years. “I am so appreciative for the exceptional legacy created by former and current department colleagues and the opportunity to carry that forward. We have so many successes to celebrate today, among them, our many distinguished alumni.”

Meltzer emphasized the importance of communication studies in today’s rapidly changing world and recognized the collective effort of faculty, alumni, and students in shaping the department’s legacy and what the future holds.

Attendees mingled and reminisced, reconnecting over shared experiences. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and nostalgia, a testament to the lasting bonds forged within the department.

This 40th anniversary celebration not only honored the accomplishments of the Department of Communication but also reinforced its commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement. As the department looks to the future and next 40 years, it remains dedicated to empowering students to navigate and shape the ever-evolving landscape of communication.
