Comm student expands creative skills with Mason Facilities summer internship

Mia Simmons, communication major with a concentration in media production and criticism

Where is your summer internship, and what is your title?

I'm a Communications & Marketing Intern with Mason Facilities.

How did you find your internship?

I discovered my internship early in the Spring 2024 semester. The supervisor for my on-campus job had sent our staff the flyer advertising the Facilities internship and encouraging anyone interested to apply. Because I am a Communication major and Marketing minor, the Communications & Marketing internship caught my eye.

What are your main responsibilities on the job?

  • Creating and posting social media content, videos, flyers, and other promotional items
  • Taking and distributing new employee headshots, according to department specifications
  • Attending Facilities-related events to capture photos and/or video collateral

What do you enjoy most about your summer internship?

I love that my internship allows me to expand on creative interests that I have had for years. The graphic design and multimedia skills that I am developing at Mason Facilities are integral experience for my future career in production.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned as an intern?

The most valuable lesson that I have learned during my internship is the importance of gaining experience in my field before graduating college. An internship is an opportunity to put your theoretical knowledge on a subject into practice. Make the most of your internship by collecting that experience and preparing yourself for your jobs in the future.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your internship experience?

I would tell other CHSS students to ask plenty of questions while in the internship environment. Your internship is your opportunity to get insight on the career field that you intend to work in. It also shows your supervisors that you are eager to learn. This could be an opportunity to market yourself and network within your field.
