The National Science Foundation (NSF) frequently advertises general information for the greater NSF community via Dear Colleague Letters (DCLs). These DCLs are intended to provide general information to the community, clarify or amend an existing policy or document, or inform the community about upcoming opportunities or special competitions for supplements to existing awards. They also may be used to announce NSF’s interest in receiving proposals in specified topical areas for Planning, Rapid Response Research (RAPID); Early-concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER); Research Advanced by Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering (RAISE); and Conference proposal types. Interested parties may search through published DCLs within NSF’s Document Library. Below are a few recent DCLs for supplemental funding to existing awards to support graduate and high school that may be of interest to CHSS Faculty.
Dear Colleague Letter (NSF 23-150) reminds current NSF awardees with a forensic science and criminal justice focus of available supplemental funding (up to $55,000) to support up to six months of additional funding for a graduate student. Recipients with awards that include funding for graduate students, including institutional Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) awards, are eligible to submit a supplemental funding request. The PI for an active GRFP fellowship (not the GRFP fellow) should contact GRFP (GRFPINTERN@nsf.gov) regarding specific requirements before submitting a supplemental funding request on behalf of a GRFP fellow.
Dear Colleague Letter (NSF 23-111) invites requests for supplemental funding to existing NSF awards to provide high school students with a meaningful research experience in the Social, Behavioral, and Economic (SBE) sciences. The NSF especially encourages requests that broaden participation of high school students from groups and geographies from diverse talent pools that have not yet been fully tapped in the SBE sciences. Before submission, PIs must contact their program officer and obtain permission to submit the supplemental funding request.
Supplemental funding requests may be submitted at any time. Interested parties should contact the CHSS Research Team at and complete a PRA Form to get started.
